Fielding Preparatory Academy is the prep school that Tom Sloane attends. Elsie Sloane is usually assumed to go there as well.

In canon[]

The school is first alluded to in Partner's Complaint, when Daria snarks about him going to it. Jane says that Tom's parents "make him go there"; presumably this is how Tom described it to her. Daria was unimpressed by this excuse.

Fielding has an honour roll, but (unlike Lawndale High) doesn't have trimesters. (Is It Fall Yet?)

When Daria first met Tom's parents, Kay Sloane assumed she went to Fielding too and was briefly stunned when she heard she went to Lawndale High instead.

Fanfiction[]

In Kara Wild's Driven Wild Universe, Fielding is where Alfred PhelpsQuinn's math teacher, once taught. In Charge of the Math Brigade, Jane tells Daria: "[Phelps] may be a stuffed shirt, but he's as big a stuffed shirt to the smart ones as to the idiots. He treats us all as equally stupid. Tom thought so, too." Later, in Into the Fire, Daria learns some troubling details about Phelps's past from a Fielding administrator, Marshall Winsett. Fielding winds up playing a significant role in the final Driven Wild Universe fanfic, Tomorrow Never Knows.

A far more detailed historical perspective of Fielding is to be found in the works of Roentgen, particularly in The Hallowed Halls of Fielding, and Legion of Lawndale Heroes. The school was founded in 1780 (making it one of the oldest academic institutions in the United States), and held a tradition of accepting only male students. Fielding became a co-ed institution in the late 20th Century, a decision that is still considered controversial by some. Acting as a boarding school in addition to accepting 'day students' (students who only attend for classes), Fielding also has a tradition of accepting international students (primarily the offspring of the extraordinarily rich and powerful from all corners of the planet), and is considered one of the best educational facilities in existence. Relationships and alliances forged by attendance at the school remain and are enjoyed/exploited throughout life by Fielding alumni. On a darker note, it has a standing contract with its cleaning company to box up and remove traces of any student who has a psychological breakdown or attempts suicide, and such students get expelled to prevent 'shame' coming to the school. Student traditions include testing new students on "The Knowledge" (Fielding history and trivia) with punishments if they answer incorrectly, and the male students voting for who the "top" female students are (the Tops becoming one of the most powerful student factions).
